DESIGNING A SHORT FILM

I’m a connoisseur of animation. It could be a short film, music video, TV show, or movie, if it’s animated-I’ll watch it. This inspired me to design my own short film for my Senior Design Thesis in 2019. I wanted to create a story that people could really connect with, so I decided to go in the direction of “what would someone do to see their loved one again?” This story takes place on a malfunctioning spaceship where a lone astronaut is so overcome with loneliness he starts to hallucinate, seeing his wife and son in the planets next to him. These hallucination convince him to step out of his spaceship to be with them and he ultimately makes the final decision to cut his attached tether to go farther.

01

THE ASTRONAUT

Exploring the way I wanted the main character to look took some thinking. Elements like time, mental state, and physical state were all aspects of the character I needed to consider.

02

NEPTUNE/WIFE

There were many elements I had to consider when creating Neptune. I had to make her alluring and seductive, but balance it with kindness and a welcoming aura. Color exploration for the planet was also needed.

03

PROTEUS/SON

Designing children was pretty difficult, but I made something that I was happy with when it came to Proteus.  The main feeling  that I wanted to communicate with him was familiarity. His human design is familiar like you have seen the kid before, but his moon form is cold and unsettling.
